New Extractivism in Ghana’s Salt Sector

Since commercial production of oil and gas started in Ghana over a decade ago, the salt sector which has historically been dominated by artisanal small-scale mining (ASM) seen renewed corporate interest. Aided state’s preference for large-scale (LSM) ASM since days Economic Reform Program, several tens thousands acres areas previously operated miners have leased to companies. Situated political settlement infrapolitics theoretical frameworks, with focus on two key producing sites (Songor Keta lagoons) using qualitative research methods through ethnographic engagement affected regions, study explores consequences this new extractivism assess long-term forced evictions, as well role civil society retention or otherwise now dominant LSM sector.
